About Remove Background

Product photos, profile pictures, ecommerce listings, design assets — a clean cutout transforms a casual snap into a professional asset. Remove Background uses BiRefNet, the current state-of-the-art segmentation model, to deliver studio-quality cutouts in seconds.

Pick from 11 specialised models including portrait, human, clothing and anime variants. Optional alpha-matting refinement recovers hair-level edge detail that older tools miss. Output as transparent PNG, WebP, or composited onto a background colour of your choice.

Remove Background — frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know.

Why is the result so much better than other tools?

We use BiRefNet — the current state-of-the-art on the DIS-5K / HRSOD benchmarks. Older tools use U2Net or MODNet, which are 2-3 years behind on accuracy.

When should I turn alpha matting on?

Always on by default — it recovers hair, fur and other fine edges that hard segmentation misses. Turn off only if you need a hard cutout (e.g. for technical drawing).

Which model should I pick?

Auto for most images. Portrait for headshots. Clothing for isolated garment shots. Anime for illustrations. The specialised models are tuned for those domains and outperform Auto in their niche.

How fast is it?

First request loads the ~450 MB model (8-15 seconds). Subsequent requests reuse the cached session and complete in 1-3 seconds per image.

Can I batch-process multiple images?

Currently one image per call. Batch mode is on the roadmap for Pro and Business plans — contact us if you need it now.
